Agrow and Carrefour are joining forces for the second edition of ““Committed to Water”“, Carrefour Spain’s pioneering programme aimed at promoting water sustainability among its fruit and vegetable suppliers.
In Spain, water stress represents one of the main challenges facing the agri-food sector. Currently, 25% of the country is affected by water stress, while more than 80% of the water consumed nationwide is used for agricultural irrigation. In response to this situation, Carrefour has designed a two-stage programme that brings innovation directly to the field, with Agrow supporting the initiative from the very beginning.
The first stage will consist of online training workshops for farmers. During these sessions, participants will explore the potential of artificial intelligence-based technologies to optimise water use in agriculture, ranging from advanced sensor systems to predictive models for crop water requirements. Agrow will share its knowledge and experience in implementing technological solutions for more efficient and sustainable irrigation management.
In the second stage of the programme, agricultural suppliers will present real projects aimed at reducing water use on their farms. Following a detailed assessment of their technical feasibility, innovative nature and measurable impact on water-use efficiency, among other criteria, the winning company will have the opportunity to implement its project on its own farm.
This year, the programme also benefits from the collaboration of the Júcar River Basin Authority, the Murcian Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Development (IMIDA), the University of Córdoba and the Cajamar Foundation.
