Evaporation: The Silent Consumer

Water is a vital resource for life, but each day we face new evidence of how it is being affected by climatic and human factors. A recent study by Texas A&M University provides a new perspective on a phenomenon that, although invisible to most, has a profound impact on the availability of this resource: the evaporation of lakes

 

According to this analysis, which covered 1.4 million natural and artificial lakes worldwide, the volume of evaporated water reaches 1,500 km³ per year, a number that represents 2.37% of the total water evaporated worldwide. To put it into perspective, this amount is even greater than the global water consumption for industrial or domestic purposes.

 

The evaporation of lakes has become a “consumidor silencioso” , directly competing with the water needs for essential human activities. This finding reveals not only a challenge in terms of water sustainability but also an opportunity to rethink how we manage and conserve water bodies.

 

 

💡Key findings

Accelerated water loss and climate change: The study shows that water loss due to evaporation has accelerated by an average of 3,12 km³ per year. This suggests that the global increase in temperature, a direct effect of climate change, is raising evaporation rates. Therefore, this phenomenon is likely to intensify year by year unless measures are taken to mitigate its causes. Adding to this is the construction of reservoirs, which contributes 500km² of additional water surface per year,providing more surface area for water to evaporate.

 

Evaporation as an unequal phenomenon: Due to its larger water surface areas, the Northern Hemisphere evaporates more water than the Southern Hemisphere. This pattern reflects how geography and human activities unequally impact the global hydrological cycle. Additionally, the regions most affected by this phenomenon are often those with a high density of reservoirs or urbanized areas near water bodies. This highlights the need for region-specific strategies to address the impact of evaporation and protect local water resources.

 

These findings raise important questions: How can we better manage our water resources? Is it possible to reduce water loss through evaporation?

 

From implementing technologies that reduce the exposure of lakes to solar radiation to redesigning reservoir systems to minimize surface water, solutions must be innovative and collaborative. Furthermore, this phenomenon reminds us that the fight against climate change is not only about reducing emissions, but also about protecting the most essential natural resources, such as water.
